The way we “solved” this conundrum (if “solved” is the right term) was to separate the two problems into separate computer systems. We created a distinct database that served as a snapshot of data from the transactional database, frozen at a specific time—and then to continuously refresh that snapshot. We called that new system a “report server” or a “data mart” or, later, a “data warehouse.” This approach kept transactions and analytic data separated. Early on, we used batch processes to connect the transactional database with the analytical database. Every night, we would copy the data out of the transaction system into the data warehouse. It all worked pretty well until the volume and pace of transactions overwhelmed such solutions, especially in light of the rise of online commerce.
